What to bring?

Fishing enthusiasts know that the right gear can make all the difference. For bonefish, we recommend using 8-weight rods for optimal performance. When targeting permit, a 9-weight rod is ideal to handle their unique challenges. For the thrill of tarpon, barracuda and jack fishing a 10-weight rod is your best bet, ensuring you’re prepared for their power and speed

Recommended Gear

  • 2 rods atleast from 8-10 wt if possible. We recommend overloading your reels with a line heavier than your rod. This can help during those windy days.

  • Hat, Buff, Good sunscreen

  • Long sleeve sun shirts & pants

  • Stripping guards

  • Cash tips for guide

    • We recommend $100 per angler per day for your guide.

  • Backpack, dry bag or wading pack

  • Rain jacket for the rainy days.

  • Wading boots.

  • Polarized sunglasses – copper or amber lens and a green lens is the best choices.

  • Lens cleaner

  • Pliers & Nippers

  • Spools of 12-40 lb fluoro tippet material.

  • Water bottle

Be Prepared

Prepare for your trip with focused practice and preparation; it’s essential for success. Permit & Bonefish are the ultimate prize in saltwater fly fishing, and here at Utila On The Fly , you’ll have a chance to catch one. To land a permit, you must be able to place your fly accurately in front of the fish, in a smaller cirle or hola hoop.. We recommend dedicating 1 to 2 hours each week before your trip to practice double haul casting with a crab fly & shrimp fly.

Customs flies

At request we are able to tie up custom flies that works great on our flats, both shrimp, crab and tarpon flies.
